class=\"builder-blank-content\">\n<p>The Myb gene family was discovered due to the presence of the v-Myb oncogene in avian myeloblastosis virus.\u00a0 This retrovirus causes a rapidly fatal myeloid leukemia in the chicken.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lipsick.su.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/amv-leukemia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium href=\"http:\/\/lipsick.su.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/v-myb-transduction.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-223\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our laboratory spent many years developing biological assays for molecular clones of v-Myb and c-Myb.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lipsick.su.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/yolksac-assay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-351\" for the v-Myb and c-Myb proteins encoded by these genes.\u00a0 The v-Myb and c-Myb proteins localize within the nucleus of the cell, bind directly to DNA, and can regulate gene expression.\u00a0 We used a variety of experimental approaches to explore the mechanism by which v-Myb and altered forms of c-Myb can transform normal blood cells into leukemic cancer cells.\u00a0 Mutated (genetically altered) forms of the human c-Myb gene cause human leukemia, brain cancer, breast cancer, and salivary gland cancer.\u00a0 Alterations of two closely related human genes,\u00a0A-Myb and B-Myb, also cause various types of human cancer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-383\" src=\"http:\/\/lipsick.su.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/fly.jpg\" alt=\"fly\" width=\"87\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In recent years we have focused on <a href=\"http:\/\/flybase.org\/\">Drosophila melanogaster<\/a> (the fruit fly) as a model system because of the powerful genetic, genomic, and cell biological tools available in this organism.\u00a0 In addition, there is much less genetic redundancy in Drosophila than in mammals.\u00a0 In particular, Drosophila have one Myb gene, two E2F genes, and two Rb genes, whereas humans and other vertebrate animals have three Myb genes, eight E2F genes, and three Rb genes.\u00a0 Drosophila Myb is required for normal progression of the cell division cycle.\u00a0 In the absence of Myb, there are defects in chromosome condensation, assembly of the mitotic spindle, attachment of chromosomes to the spindle, and cytokinesis.\u00a0 Defective cytokinesis results in cells that contain more than one nucleus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lipsick.su.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/binucleate-cells.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-353\"
